Dreams coming true....sort of

As a little girl, my mom always had my hair fixed really cute. She even hand-made bows for me and my sister. I loved being such a girlie-girl! From a very young age I wanted to be a mom and dreamed of having my own little girl to dress up and be able to fix her hair for her. I wanted to hand-make bows and ribbons and create different hairstyles every day for my little girl.

So you can imagine my excitement to finally have a little girl after having 2 boys. Within weeks of her being born (with absolutely no hair), I was buying bows and ribbons in every color. I waited anxiously for her hair to come in.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited some more.

When she was about 18 months, we could finally pull enough hair together to make 2 tiny little ponytails! That was the only option I had for months. Once she turned 2, she decided that she was too independent to let me fix her hair at all. And she has been that way ever since. She hates for me to even brush her long, beautiful blond hair, much less actually "fix" it in any way. It's a battle we have almost every morning. She will let her teacher pull it up in a simple ponytail so that it will stay out of her face while she is trying to play at school, but that's as far as it goes. I am always asking her if I can fix it, but I am always turned down.

By some miracle (and lots of bribing), there was one day that I was actually permitted to put her hair up in pigtails and braid them for a soccer game. I took lots of pictures that day!

I felt like my dreams were starting to fade away. Until a couple of days ago. Suddenly my child is begging for my hair styling skills! Could it be a change of heart? Can I really get out my small, medium, and large curling irons!? Flat irons?! Crimpers?! Where to begin?! Do I need to make a trip to the craft store and get started on those ribbons and bows?! Could it really be????

Oh wait. Never mind. It's my 14 year old SON who wants me fix his hair! He has decided that his straight hair isn't um...quite straight enough these days. So every morning he has been getting up extra early and coming in to my salon, I mean bathroom, for my flat iron skills. I suppose it's not quite the original dream I once had but it sure is nice being needed---especially by a teenager who, most of the time, thinks he doesn't need his mommy anymore!
